The sound waves of Radiant Circles, the youthful effervescence and powerful lyricism of Rachmaninoff, one of the most beloved symphonies of the romantic repertoire: a programme of a thousand reflections.
Radiant Circles, by composer Augusta Read Thomas, begins in a suspended and crystalline atmosphere, the music transforming into swirling spirals, to culminate in an energetic fanfare.
The work of a musician barely 18 years old, still a student at the Conservatoire, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1 – his Opus 1 – remains one of his most endearing scores. It culminates in the monumental soloist's cadenza of its first movement.
The premiere in 1883 of Symphony No. 3 was the occasion of one of Brahms's greatest triumphs: "the tributes to the composer reached a degree of enthusiasm almost never before equalled in Vienna," wrote his biographer Max Kalbeck. "
