About — The place
The Canal Saint-Martin, 4.55 km long, is primarily located in the 10th and 11th arrondissements of Paris. It connects the Bassin de la Villette — and beyond, the Canal de l'Ourcq — to the Port de l'Arsenal (Paris's marina), which communicates with the Seine. It is a small-gauge canal originally intended for supplying drinking water to the capital. Inaugurated in 1825, it features nine locks and two swing bridges, with a total drop of 25 m.
Together with the Canal de l'Ourcq, the Bassin de la Villette, and the Canal Saint-Denis, it forms the network of Parisian canals, 130 km long, which belongs to the City of Paris. The Canal Saint-Martin has been listed as a historical monument since 23 February 1993.
