About — The venue

The Théâtre Essaïon is a performance venue located at 6, rue Pierre-au-Lard in Paris 4e, in the Marais district.

Set in one of the medieval cellars of the former Hôtel de l'Aigle d'Or, it was founded in 1975 by a troupe of actors gathered around Régis Santon. This initial venture failed due to lack of funds.

The venue was taken over by José Valverde to present original contemporary plays. In 1987, actress Alida Latessa succeeded him.

In 1995, a second 70-seat hall was created in another vaulted cellar adjacent to the first.

In 2003, the theatre became a venue primarily dedicated to original and repertoire songs and musical theatre. The small hall was transformed into a 70-seat cabaret. It notably hosted the group Les Goguettes as well as Sophie Makhno's last concerts.

In January 2006, the team from Aktéon Théâtre took over the reins of the theatre and revived the theatre in the main hall.
